Shoeshine, Smiles and It’s Its - Interviews

This week has been one of our interview weeks. During interview week I sit in the hallways at different church buildings chatting with missionaries as they come and go and wait for their turn to talk with the President. I love interview weeks for a few reasons one of which is I get to learn a lot of fun things about our missionaries, including their favorite scriptures, places to visit on P-days and It’s -Its! What is an It’s-It? Great question, I just learned for my self that an It’s-It is a San Francisco ice cream treat. Basically, it is yummy ice cream between two oatmeal cookies dunked in chocolate. What could be more delicious!?! We’re hooked now and have a freezer full for missionaries to enjoy when they stop by the mission home.

This week I brought with me to the interviews shoe polish and my sewing machine. I thought it would be a good idea for the missionaries to spiff up their shoes. I also told them to bring any items in need of mending.  I’ve been able to sew on quite a few buttons and mend up torn seams in pants and dresses. The missionaries learned that most articles of clothing have an extra button or two sewn in the hem or on the label in case a button falls off and is lost.

Quite often missionaries will bring Mark and me a treat. They know I love berries and that root beer is a favorite treat of ours.  We’re grateful for their thoughtfulness. At interviews the zone leaders bring supplies - Books of Mormon and pass along cards from the mission office for missionaries to give out. If there are any packages from home for a missionary in their zone, the leaders will bring those too.

Most of all I love all the smiles I get from our wonderful missionaries!! Despite the challenges our missionaries face in their service, they move forward in faith and love for each other and the people they have been called by a living prophet to serve. Missionary work can be difficult and discouraging. Yet, as you can see each week on this blog and on our Instagram (quinns_in_casrm) from the smiles of our missionaries, they love the work and the Lord. President Quinn and I consider it an honor to serve with these remarkable young people.
