MHC, Sister Schneider, and - Toothpaste

President & Sister Quinn, Sister Schneider, and Ian Farr - during MHC zoom meeting

One of our most important responsibilities as mission leaders is to help our missionaries be healthy, happy, and successful. We have a strong line-up of professional medical advisors to assist us with keeping our missionaries healthy. Each month we hold a Mission Health Council (MHC) over zoom with our advisors to discuss our missionaries’ health so we can plan appropriate support and any needed interventions. We are blessed to have amazing professionals available to work with our missionaries. A missionary can get a doctor’s appointment or a therapy session within the week.

Screen shot from our MHC meeting last week. Starting in the upper left corner. is Dr. Stewart, Sister & President Quinn, The Ritchies, Ian Farr, Elder Taylor, Dr. Mitchell and Sister Schneider. (Sister Ritchie will be our new mission nurse.)

Our mission medical advisors are: Robert Taylor, MD our Area Medical Advisor (AMA), Ian Farr, MSW our mission therapist, Rachael Mitchell MD our mission doctor, Dean Stewart DDS our mission dentist and Sister Gloria Schneider, RN our Mission Health Advisor/Nurse (MHA).  I, myself, work closely with Ian Farr and Dr. Mitchell as a mission mental health advisor.

Quinns with Sister Schneider

Another AMA we worked with closely who has now finished his service - Elder Nielson and his wife.

Let me introduce you to Sister Schneider, our mission MHA/nurse. She keeps busy daily answering her phone giving advice for anything from a twisted ankle to a case of the seasonal flu. She has the “urgent care” facilities in the area on speed dial. She counsels with missionaries with Type 1 Diabetes, those with seizure disorders, and those who are susceptible to migraine headaches. She has found specialists in our area who will see these missionaries. She works hard to keep our missionaries healthy!

Sister Schneider is fun loving, likes to laugh, and listens closely to the Spirit as she advises our missionaries on how to stay healthy. Sister Schneider takes the time to really get to know our missionaries and helps with their unique needs. She sends out an excellent and informative weekly health report to me and Dr. Taylor every Sunday evening.

One story of Sister Schneider’s that I love, is when a missionary called her a couple of times because upon awakening the missionary’s mouth felt tingly and her tongue was swollen. She could swallow and breathe just fine, thank heavens, but they could not figure out what was causing the uncomfortable symptoms, which continued even after taking Benadryl. The next morning the missionary called again with the same concerning symptoms. Sister Schneider told me, “Without further thought, I told her she was allergic to her toothpaste. Honestly the words had not formed in my brain before they few out of my mouth.” It turned out she had been given a gift package with some toothpaste in it and was using this new brand the last couple of days! Problem solved! Sister Schneider went on to say to me, “If we are a willing vessel and we are striving to do the Lord’s work, He will use us as an instrument to further His work and watch over His missionaries. The Holy Ghost, will direct our thoughts and actions.” Sister Schneider had listened to the Spirit and received the inspired answer.

Sister Schneider organizes parties and get togethers for ward members and our senior missionaries. Her mission is coming to a completion here in California. We are sad to see her leave. She will actually continue her service in the Wisconsin Milwaukee mission, where she lives. We’re going to miss her a lot here! Thank you for your service Sister Schneider!

We look forward to welcoming our new nurse, Sister Ritchie and her husband! Brother Ritchie will serve as a member - leader support missionary.
